Getting the correct measurements for handmade curtains, bespoke blinds or soft furnishings is important otherwise you run the risk of ordering an item that’s too big, small, long or short. When you are measuring for curtains, it’s a good idea to measure the width of the track or pole itself. If you don’t have a track or pole up yet, measure the width of the window with around 20cm extra on each side. You will also need to measure the length, stopping the measurement where you would like the curtains to hang down to. For blinds, measure the width of the window and add around 10cm to the total. This will allow for 5cm of overlap on either side, to ensure light is effectively blocked.

There are benefits to both curtain tracks and curtain poles, and the best option for you will depend on the type of curtains you want. Curtain tracks are less visible and are usually hidden by the curtain fabric, making them a popular choice for people who want to keep things simple. However, tracks are not suitable for eyelet curtains and a handful of other styles. Though a pole is more visible and sometimes more expensive, it is also a much more versatile option. If you are unsure about choosing a track or a pole, speak to Gerry Sykes Design.

At Gerry Sykes Design, we use a range of fabric types and fabric companies to ensure our customers have a lot of choice. Though there are many fabric options out there, some are better suited to handmade curtains, bespoke blinds or soft furnishings than others. For example, cotton is a popular choice for curtains as it’s lightweight and versatile. Nylon, polyester and linen are also commonly used. For blinds, we often recommend blackout fabrics to reduce the amount of sunlight and to boost privacy.
