About Gerry Sykes Designs
My textiles journey began when I was around five years old, back in the 1980s, trying to glue together a little bag made from felt squares. I was always making something, drawn to colour, texture, and the joy of creating by hand. Even my early attempts at knitting, though full of holes, were part of that same instinct to make and explore.
By high school, I knew I was good with my hands and excelled in Home Economics, which gave me the confidence to follow a creative path. I went on to study Art and Design at South Thames College and Camberwell College of Arts, before completing a BA (Hons) in Constructed Textiles at Middlesex University.
During my time at Middlesex, I gained work experience with tufted rug designer Helen Yardley, which became an important stepping stone in my creative development. This led to opportunities working with her at 100% Design and later at Helen Yardley Studios, where I developed valuable hands-on experience in textile craftsmanship and bespoke design.
My professional journey into soft furnishings began when I joined Three Mice Blinds, where I specialised in Roman blinds and spent three years developing my skills. In 2005, I started my own business, and it was then that I went on to learn curtain making while working for myself. Over time, this grew into a real passion for creating bespoke soft furnishings, combining practical skill, craftsmanship, and attention to detail.
Today, I still find joy in making. I love sewing soft furnishings, knitting sweaters and cardigans, and now crochet too. What began as a childhood love of textiles has grown into a lifelong creative journey, rooted in craftsmanship, detail, and a passion for making beautiful, thoughtful pieces by hand.
